By request of applicants interested in interning with Social Help Online, LLC (SocialHelpOnline.com) for 2012, we are providing the following information. (FYI: these are the same details that were available via LinkedIn subgroup, pre-March 23rd). We have received many emails from interested students, alumni and others – we will be making a decision, soon. In the interim, please refer to this blog post and feel free to post any questions.
Dear Candidates,
If you read my blog post, How To Receive ROI From Giving Back, you already know of three things…
1. I’m serious about “Giving Back” in ways which enable others to prosper and I actively make time to do so, because I am incredibly grateful to all of those help me learn and grow.
2. The internships my partners and I offered, last year, were very successful, fun, experiences for both our interns and our startups. We’re keen on having a repeat performance this year.
3. I was very fond of the opportunity I received to participate in the inaugural, 2011 Leadership & Career Networking Event at my alma mater. This event, in particular, is close to my heart and has proved to be extremely helpful for those of us offering internships as well as those prospective interns in-seek of professional experience. There is a strong likelihood that my partners and I will fill our internship positions with students or alum who took the time to inquire and attend these events.
Update:
Having just returned from the 2012 Leadership & Career Summit, held this past Friday – March 23rd; I am as thrilled to see our event grow in numbers and activities (such as the awesome alumni and student band during dinner!). I spent quality time, again, with the talented peers, cheerful current and retired staff and the bright students who attended. I owe an enormous shout-out to Bill Robertson and his staff for pulling-off another successful event, as well as giving we alum and students this wonderful networking opportunity - thank you! Likewise, it was a nice treat to see the Dougherty’s, Kay and David, as well as Mr. Thomas Ruth, the Nelson’s, the Dollhopf’s, Margie Ritchie-Neiswender, and so many others I met, networked or caught-up with, who also took the time to make an appearance this year. I owe special thanks to Joe and Jen Lagor for their hosting and hospitality. There are too many alum and students to list, but it was absolutely awesome seeing or meeting you – I’m already looking forward to next year. (Hopefully, we don’t wait another 365 days to hang, again, eh)!? And lastly, but certainly not least, I want to thank Brian Kendrick for his convenient and fun carpool to/from Pottstown, Pa. this year.

-COMPANY
bonavist, LLC (http://www.bonavist.com) is a technology company that specializes in delivering revolutionary online and mobile solutions to the healthcare industry.
-DESCRIPTION
Someday, you may be required to watch the 1992 film, Glengarry Glen Ross, to prepare for your first, real estate job… Trust us, the bonavist ”sales”internship isn’t anywhere near as intimidating as real estate agent, Alec Baldwin in that flick (…and it also has nothing to do with real estate).
Our intern will proactively email and call insurance carriers to conduct research. The internship objective is to help us determine the technology standards of each insurance carrier via a simple survey; however, reaching informed contacts on this subject will take the persistence and investigative savviness of a biz-dev ninja!
Our intern should be certain he/she is comfortable communicating via email and telephone. Interns may also be asked to schedule in-person meetings or calls (between technology officers cultivated from insurance companies and the founders of our healthcare technology company). The intern’s ability to learn how to articulate our services, as well as understand corporate structure within the healthcare industry, will determine his/her success.
-ELIGIBILITY

-COMPENSATION
This is an unpaid internship; however, interns who deliver exceptional results will absolutely receive a monetary bonus. (All interns receive letter of endorsement).

Often times, it is easy for us all to overlook the simple fact that as a Hill student or alumnus, we have been so very fortunate to receive an education and in what is practically a utopian environment, surrounded by a community of caring intellectuals. — Many people in our nation have never had the opportunity to share this experience with us and will never experience anything like it for one reason or another.

Interns may explore potential new event locations and participation. Interns are encouraged to help reach-out to potential philanthropic supporters. Interns will learn about government grants for non-profit, charitable organizations.
We need our interns to help promote Give Your Sole and the generous services the missions and shelters that we work with offer to the millions of those those who wish to be a part of our little miracles, but have yet to hear about us.

So, it’s 1:43 AM on a Wednesday morning and, like always, I’m up doing work (“the Vampire” as my Dad would call me)… My pal, Cameron, just contacted me over Google Voice (naturally), because I posted and Tweeted the following, only moments earlier:
Needless to say, Cam now has me testing the “Press This” WordPress bookmarklet plugin to post, a post, about Cam’s new site: “Poliblogz.com – The Best Political Blogz on the Net“, directly from his site, to my site…without having to go back into the WP DASHBOARD on my site to do so…(all of you non-Interwebbers catch all of that? OK, good). That’s what this plugin allows you to do and it works well..although, I clearly like to spend more time drafting my blogs than the average person, so I’m not certain this “quick fix to press” solution will suit me as it does Cam (…but the random guy in that video, per the link I found on the subject, sure loves his “Press This” bookmarklet! ;-p).
Have no fear, Cam had actually called to explain to me everything there is to know about RSS feeds (my original question, of course)… In fact, I’m glad he did. If you check out his site, he utilizes RSS feeds to automatically gather the majority of his political content (ie: articles distributions from publications he’s keen) on display! Yes folks, that’s exactly how simple it can to become an “online author”, I mean “Syndicate”, I mean “blog author,”.. I mean, I mean… Look, no diss to Cam; truth be told, I find the layout of his stie and methods perfectly fitting for his syndicated-blogging needs. I’m sure it’s an ideal solution for his readers, too… But…will it work for NAGYBOMB.com? Read on, my fellow Nagybombers, read on…
Now, what if Cameron were not awake to answer my pleading inquiry to the social world this morning? I’m glad you asked. I assume, like everyone and their mother, I would have put this task off for later or turned to Google… Well, I have a secret, even with Cam’s advice, I decided to give ‘ol Wikipedia’s explanation a whirl (the first link to pop-up on Google on the subject of RSS); Wikipedia provided the following insight: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS
I must admit, I’ve always understood the basic premise of how RSS functions, but I just wanted to know if there was anything else I should be doing with the RSS syncs provided by my blog, in particular. I mean, my RSS link (http://www.nagybomb.com/feed/) sits there on the bottom of my site, but who uses it and how can I utilize or advertise feature better? (That’s the type of thinking that led me to post/Tweet about RSSesssesss in the first place). I digress…at least now I finally know what the acronym RSS means: “Really Simple Syndication”. (Is it sad that it’s taken me this long? I mean, come on!…there’s got to be some of you out there with me on this, right?, right?, Bueller? ….Ferris? …Cameron? — ha. you catch that double reference, my reader?) And we’re moving on…
Before this morning, I’ve always asked my developers and designers to “make sure we setup RSS feeds” for both the websites and the mobile applications we’ve created. They would tell me to “use them”…well, OK, I didn’t, but at least our customers/clients could. Many of them were were RSSS (aka: “Really Simple Syndication Savvy!“) . I remember when I hunted-down Matt Rutledge of Woot.com and spoke with him in their early days about including Woot’s RSS feeds in an application that my partners, Blinglets and I were creating for AT&T’s mobile browser (circa 2008?)… It was cool to speak with the “Pin-Headed Boss” as they call him; so, I guess I’m not all the RSS-lame that I thought I was..?
When it came to developing NAGYBOMB, I was never inclined to setup my RSS jazz “just so I could have content”…I mean, I figured doing that would be cheating the value of scribing original content on “Grand Eurekas!“. People come to NAGYBOMB.com to read of my take on innovations and big ideas, as well as the opinions of those Members in NAGY VENTURE’s consortium. ”I have to keep it real. I have to keep it in my own voice” (I keep telling myself). Cam effectively uses RSS feeds and they make his life as a blogger, easier. The content he’s pulling-into Poliblogz is 100% worthy of being there as it pertains to political discussions (and yes, he does actually take the time to source and vet each article an RSS feed may dig-up) . Cam seems to enjoy all of the content his feeds are populating and having it all in one place for his readers via RSS works splendidly. Still, I visit about a dozen sites, daily, regarding my specific interests and I don’t want to post on my blog everything they post on their sites – Perhaps, I’m just too darn picky, but I like creating original content and simply referencing other articles – articles I assume my audience also readily.
I’m enjoying learning about the tweaks we can make to blog read/write more efficiently. Tools like RSS are simple and free; they can actually improve the online destinations we spend hours and hours reading, watching and sharing with our colleagues. Heck, some people make a living off of such websites! RSS is just another little component of our lives; another innovation, we should all be in awe. Look, I’m sure, most programmers are laughing at my comments right now…yes, I know it’s not Biometric Payment Processing or Kurzweil’s Singularity Theory that we’re praising here, it’s simply RSS, but hey – I’ve been a little RSS retarded…bare with those of us who are catching-up to you RSSS (aka: Real Simple Syndication Superstars).
The moral of this story boys and girls? – While I thought there was going to be something truly amazing I could do with RSS, it’s probably not going to be the best fit for my blog to “syndicate” per se’; however, it is nice to know others, like Cameron, are utilizing RSS to do great things for their online solutions. With the appropriate layout, RSS does its job to feed meaningful and relevant content you depict in two shakes of a dogs’ tail. Yep, RSS does serve its purpose and now we see why heavy users love it so.
Mucho kudos to my pal, Cam! His site’s RSS solution really works well and the layout of it all looks great! (Thanks for taking the time to fill-me-in on the subject, Cam, so I can teach my readers how easy it is to use RSS feeds for syndicated blogging, especially)! Yes readers, if you don’t have all of the time in the world (like I apparently have?) to schedule and scribe post-novels, Cam’s savvy RSS hack certainly does the trick.
Here’s a link to Cam’s informative site - check it out, Nagybombers! He’s an analytical, political wizard and a good friend of mine, so feel free to bust his chops a bit, publicly…you know, just like how people talk about politicians and their politics.
I look forward to implementing RSS feeds into my other projects a bit better, because I welcome any means to practice the K.I.S.S. method with regard to my future research and posts.Ω
I’d also like to add that I’ve found vlogging to be one a hack for simpletons and it’s quite fun to produce, too — I cannot wait for all of my videos to be up on Nagybomb.com, next!
Ω = UPDATES: (Friday, March 16th) – The other night, Cam and I got together with our mutual life-long, pal, Jordan Hahn to partake in a bit of weekly trivia at Jordan’s go-to spot in Inwood, NYC (fyi: Jordan runs the pub quiz with his co-host, Phil, and it’s great fun accompanied by a wonderful selection of beer and grub—such as Lobster Mac’n'cheese! If you’re ever in the area, swing-by on Wednesday nights – it’s good brain food and food…food). …
Jordan inspired me to find another use for RSS feeds…For years, I have utilized Google Chrome (web browser) to open 17 pages, automatically each day, so that I attend to the latest in entrepreneur, M&A, VC and startup news. As you can imagine, it’s a tad time consuming to await the loading of each page and scroll articles on each. By setting up my personal iGoogle “page” I now use it on a regular basis to achieve this same research, all in one place. I now have one reference point to gather all of the data to the articles I want to read each day across the web. One personal, browser “page” that functions just like Cam’s political blog, but via my private, Google settings and view. The following RSS feeds provide all I need via iGoogle:
Springwise
TechCrunch
Wired Top Stories
Fast Company
HowStuffWorks Daily Feed
Movies: New York
Wired Top Stories
Mashable!
TechCrunch » Startups
AllThingsD
VentureBeat
Forbes.com: Most popular stories
TechCrunch (startups)
Young Entrepreneur – Small Business & Entrepreneur Community
NYT DealBook
Forbes – Entrepreneurs
Entrepreneur (top stories)
TEDTalks (video)
BBC News – Home
USA Top Stories
ProPokerSchool
SocialHelpOnline
PrepSociety
(Screenshot: NAGYBOMB RSS via iGoogle)
Thus far, I’ve also installed the following ‘Google Gadgets’ for this page ( iGoogle Gadgets are like RSS Widgets, the function similarly to how you can use/install Widgets via Dashboard on an Mac ) :
-Ping.fm for iGoogle
-Weather
-Quotes
-Google Calendar
-Google Translate
Next up? Google Reader - imagine all RSS feeds in one spot, without all of the other Google gadgets (ie: Translate, Calendar, etc)…It’s a magazine format of RSS feeds (and I have a hunch it saves content and notes online and offline, but don’t quote my inexperience on that just yet). Yes, I really must take advantage of this tool, next! As Jordan has suggested, we imagine this tool is a great way to navigate content (eg: news articles, blogs) via mobile devices / mobile browsers, too.

“Own it.”
This is the first musing that I have record; perhaps that’s because it was the simplest to record… As simple as these two words may appear, their effect has been HUGE. This is a Nagyism I’ve held dear over the years…
Own it. - As a clear, motivational tool, I often recite these two words to myself when thinking about the physical things I literally want to own someday and what I need to do to procure them. “Own it” means to do what it takes; do all that it takes, to succeed so you can achieve what you want. (We often hear people saying “Damn, he got owned!” as slang when someone gets jammed-on a game of basketball, for example.. We’ll say the phrase: “Own it, Chris!” when we’re cheering someone-on —wishing him/her luck to sail through an interview or a meeting with a new client we wish of them to close, perhaps. Only recently has it occurred to me just how frequently I may have heard my artist and entertainer friends refer to the degree in which they must “own” and perfect their craft in order to see success… Owning it is used similarly in this case.
Own it. – Something, I believe, we all must learn to practice (whether we learn it the easy way or the hard way) is to Own-UP to our own actions; acknowledging that we are both accountable and responsible for everything it is we do, say or cause to occur in our lives, and those of the others we influence.
Own it. - At times, the most profound sayings are those which do not require us to actually say many words at all. We often see this occur in regard to effective taglines or slogans: “Just Do It” ; “Imagine“; “Yes We Can” – I’m certain I don’t have to tell you which professional and personal brands these examples belong… (Catchy song lyrics are a phenomenal use of short, meaningful lingo…everyone knows the chorus of a popular song or at least the short bits we can clearly understand the first time we hear it). Simple phrases resonate easily with even the most A.D.D. of listeners, but the meaningful sayings are those we all hum along, almost as fad, with others.
There was once a time in my life when I desired the saying, Own it, synonymous with building good character and driving motivation. It’s nice knowing, now, that I have since shared this basic phrase so many times with the others in my life, that I know it has made a worthwhile impact…myself included.

“ROI from Giving Back? But isn’t the entire point of Giving NOT to see any ROI?”
…Yes, that is 100% true, but there is a way to achieve ROI from giving back…Can you really blame me for titling this post alternatively to the methods everyone else already asks of you and your time to: “Donate now!” Read on and you’ll see what I mean based on what my experience “Giving Back” has meant for me and others on the same page…
- No, I’m not recruiting for the revolution of selfless hoarders to donate more of our old stuff to the Salvation Army…
- No, I didn’t sign-up for a mission or Habitat for Humanity project in a far-off distant land (although I do look forward to making time for that, too, someday)…
- Yes, I still advise non-profit, GiveYourSole.org, but in this instance, the latest recipients of my good will are not exactly in-need in that same capacity. In fact, they are some of the most privileged and talented minds I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting!
“What?!” (you would say) “Who are these people and why on Earth would you spend your valuable time trying to help anyone fully-capable of helping themselves?”
… Ah-ha! Now you’re asking the right questions. Remember what it was like NOT having your… Driver’s License?
“Ummm, yeah…but I really don’t get where you’re going with this story..?” (says you).
…Fair enough. Let’s quit this theoretical dialogue ~ here’s the direct scoop:
Remember what it was like way-back-when you were a teenager and you had only your bicycle to get around? ”The world was your oyster,” yet, you weren’t even legally permitted to drive to the next city, let alone, cruise the globe! Remember how badly you wanted that driver’s license, just to drive a little further than you had ever been…just to see what was out there around the corner…just to explore?! That’s the demographic I’m referring; that’s the group I was to donate my time in this instance. This demographic is comprised of fresh, teenage minds full of imagination with so very much life ahead to live. Even greater is their craving to learn from anyone willing to share with them proven tips and valuable experience. Perhaps now you see what I’m talking about, because my friends, while it may seem like a lifetime ago, we were all in these very shoes at one time in our own lives. A time when we would do anything to learn realities in a world of unknowns. The time in our lives we dreamt, nightly, of wondrous possibilities, if not day-dreamt of them, too…
In March of 2011 an opportunity presented itself. I was certain that it was my time (whether I was fully prepared for it or not) to Give Back, as best I could give it, to the place that gave me so much in my life. Unlike my typical philanthropic pursuits, in this case, I would be giving back to kids whose biggest concern in life was fortunately not to cure their own poverty or disease…no, this group simply had the luxury of craving the advancement of their own knowledge and skills. Knowledge of what it was like to own a car and a driver’s license, sure, but more importantly, the kind of priceless knowledge regarding how best to prepare for college life…and without a doubt, learn the type of skills that would help them to understand what it would be like to work in the “real world” post college.
I was pumped. Maybe it’s just the fact that I’m not a teacher by trade or perhaps it’s because I have yet to be a parent; maybe it’s because I’ve never had a younger, inquisitive, sibling to “harass” me for advice ~ but I found myself becoming very enthusiastic about the idea of passing-on some of the smarts I’ve acquired (and also wished I had known before I took my first “real job”). I was especially excited, because I had good reason to believe that this particular audience would listen, ask questions and even implement learned tactics. Thus, there was a good chance I could actually help them. I would, at least, try to make a mere smidgeon of the impact on young, talented minds that the professors of my adolescence had certainly made on me and my peers. Yes, our teachers had years of our time to influence us, but I would only have one day…and maybe a summer intern at the conclusion of that day – if I was so lucky.
Bill Robertson, Director of Alumni Relations, at The Hill School and I had been chatting about such an opportunity for months. An upcoming event held at our alma mater in Pottstown, Pa; would be the first, Annual Leadership and Career Event. It was early 2011 and it goes without saying that alumni would be encouraged to register to speak to students about real-life business experience and offer internships. We alumnae would also entertain an evening of dinner together to professionally network. And it would all take place one Sunday, a few months down the road, on our great campus – a place where we had all spent four years of our lives; years learning and living to be men (and women) well before our years, if you will.
Like the students I was to meet, I felt I had a knack for delivering presentations and networking, but I had no means to gauge how successful or not our inaugural event would be that day. I only knew what I needed to do… I would commute to NJ, borrow a vehicle and then drive back into NYC to pickup other committed alumni, only to trek us all the way out to Pottstown. I knew I would make a few, key points about what it meant to me to be an entrepreneur in particular. I also knew I would go over the details of each internship position during my time addressing the students. I figured that it would be absolutely phenomenal if any Hill student found interest in an internship with any of the startups within or outside of my portfolio. But all-along, I was trying to think of what the students would need to hear from me, especially since I figured they might not even know what to ask. I gave this an awful lot of thought, because I didn’t want our event to be a failure. If there is one thing I’ve learned (and often preach to my business partners) it is that proper relationship-building can go a long, long way in life. I loved what The Hill was offering us all with this opportunity…I knew that if done correctly, our individual participation, in and of itself, would provide a ROI on many levels for our Hill community, at-large…I had not even begun to think about what it truly could do for me and my startups.
The night before the 2011 Leadership and Career Summit, I printed-out eight booklets, the contents of which I had begun putting together a week prior. Each booklet contained an outline of the same twelve, potential, internship positions. I had asked a dozen of the entrepreneurs, as well as established businesses in my network, if they would be willing to take-on an intern (or two) for the summer. I convinced them that the students I would select would be determined and well-mannered; despite the fact I would still have to argue their abilities as mere teenagers (after all, this was a real concern of my constituency which I respected; however, I was all the while certain it would not be an issue with Hill students. Most people simply have a perception of stereotypical, inexperienced or immature adolescents and I was fairly certain the students would be motivated and scholarly). I requested each company write a short description illustrating the job duties interns would be responsible for completing during their summer ’11 internships.
The day of the event was top-notch on Hill’s part; naturally. The carpooled-commute to Pottstown and back, on a lonely Sunday, tested my patience a bit; however, from the minute my peers and I arrived on campus, our game-faces were “on.” We each wanted interns who would enjoy working for us that summer. We were anxious to explain why our unique opportunities would be “the best experience” for them to apply per their specific talents. My peers, a few years younger than myself, Teddy van Beuren and Neil Kahrim, met with classrooms full of courteous and inquisitive students, as did I. I remember asking my groups of students to review the booklets I had provided them and write down their name/email if they had interest to learn more about any opportunity. Those who did, received a one-on-one convo with me before our time was over. Those who shared their information only for future networking sake, I made certain to follow-up via email with relevant Hill alumni or other contacts they should pursue – per the interests they shared with me.
In both sessions with the students I tried to get to know each student as best time would allow us. We covered all of their remaining networking and career questions, of course, before I asked: Where they called “home”… I asked Which Form (aka: English preparatory lingo for one’s particular year of schooling: 3rd form = Freshman year…6th form = senior year) they were currently in… If they had college matriculation plans as of yet… What they were thinking about doing with their lives after college… and even: Why they were leaning towards one specific career choice over another… I found that their answers allowed us to chat freely about mutual aspirations as they related to our private-schooling experience and each of our unique backgrounds. A unanimous realization we all concluded was the importance of participating in career networking and internship opportunities such as the event our alma mater had prepared for us that day.
I shared with them a story that I recall a fellow alumnus had shared with me on “Career Day” (ie: when internships weren’t really the main focus of alumni speeches, but alumni still came back to The Hill, for a day, to speak with us about their occupations). This gentleman, as I recall, told my class of tips I’ve most certainly used and will never forget… I’ve decided to save all of his noteworthy points for those who meet with me each year upon our new tradition: the annual, Leadership & Career Summit held on campus, but one point was simply this: “…If you’ve made the time to be here, you deserve to hear some good advice. This should be the way with all things in life, but it isn’t…“ The ironic part is that I don’t even remember the company he ran/owned or even his name…I just remember that it was my first Career Day experience and my classmate had talked me into attending his session to learn what he had to say. He was a “Big Wig”, an entrepreneur, he had risked it all to evolve his company (let’s just call the company Newsweek for lack of a better example; it may not be entirely accurate, but it was as significant an operation). The life lessons he told us spawned from his proven and tried experience. His words were priceless. Some of what I had learned that day would aid the rest of my working career…

Still curious exactly “HOW TO RECEIVE ROI FROM GIVING BACK“? Well, there’s no question this experience was a “win-win” for myself, The Hill School, each of our summer intern-students, and each of the participating startups I had arranged ~ The following is a complete breakdown of our collective ROI…
* Months of Preparation! – A great deal of effort went into the creation of the inaugural 2011 Leadership & Career Summit on behalf of The Hill School’s hard-working staff: networking, scheduling, catering and marketing. (Thank you!)
* One Full Sunday! — A big shout-out to the students who came out to the internship event to network and learn about the opportunities alumni were offering over the summer! It must have been a drag to put on “Academic Dress” and devote time to hanging with “strangers” in The Academic Center for a few hours over the weekend…especially after just returning to The Hill from your break! Those of you who made the event last year earned my upmost appreciation and respect – you made my trip back to Hill, worthwhile. (Good job and Thank you!)
* One email-blast — Yep, I took a little time to email as many of my Hill School chums I could muster, requesting their support of the 2011 Leadership & Career Summit.
* One Week of Planning — actually, less than one week planning, outlining and following-up with a handful of companies to draft appropriate internship details.
* Three Phone Calls / Two Facebook Chats / Two LinkedIn-mails — we participants chatted via these means to coordinate our personal and group agendas for the event. (This kinda stuff isn’t time-sensitive or strenuous at all)!
* A Few Hours of Travel — my train ride to NJ, a drive back to NYC and then to PA…and back. (Big whoop! I commuted with the great company of my peers).
* An Afternoon with a Genuine and Captive Audience – it was time well-spent speaking with students I’ll never forget.
* A Few Hours For Dinner – decent grub with a lot of great alumni and faculty I rarely get the chance to spend time with, in-person. (Good diversity of age, industry/occupation, location and experience).
* A Few Hours per Week During Summer — Yes, my partners and I spent time checking-in, teaching and updating each intern regarding the progress of their specific internship goals and objectives throughout the summer months. (I found it easy to split this effort with my business partners).
* $25 — had I not donated to The Hill School’s annual fund previously last year, the dinner would have cost me twenty-five smackers. (Not a fee that will break-the-bank).

3) Kimberly Breeding, Social Media – Summer ’11 Intern: Social Help Online, LLC

5) Manyata Berbick, Healthcare & Tech Research – Summer ’11 Intern: bonavist, LLC
6) Emily Overholt, Copyeditor & Social Media – Summer ’11 Intern: Social Help Online, LLC
Read each Exit Summary the above listed interns wrote regarding their individual, internship experience:
Read the Endorsement Letters participating companies (and even our company’s clients!) provided the interns on behalf of their great work:
I encourage every busy professional to remember what it was like to be a curious adolescent (and especially if you went to my alma mater)! Take the time out of your work to influence the future leaders of tomorrow. Either arrange or participate directly in a career networking or internship event. I know plenty of almuni who networked among themselves during our event to further their own careers/interests. (FYI: That is also a main objective of these types of engagements! If you do not have an internship to offer, because you are in-seek of a job as an alumnus, submit your resume to The Hill School before March 23rd of this year! Come to The Hill’s dinner event to network with your peers — I hear they even have prepared some fancy, musical accompaniment for us to enjoy this time around)!
In the end, all it takes is a little initiative to make a big impact in the lives of others, yet, the success of our community will only be as productive and strong as we are socially committed and connected. Your own life or business will prosper from some extracurricular networking with others of whom you share an ancient, common bond. With any luck, you’ll see it all pay-off with immediate monetary ROI; certainly your reputation will blossom as a caring alumnus; and every colleague at your workplace should seemingly applaud your efforts for referring or recruiting a reliable and helpful intern as team members for the summer.
I have been very fortunate to receive all of these ROIs. The work completed by each of our interns has helped each of our startups evolve. In some cases it took a year for meaningful results to surface, while other tasks made it possible for summer interns to produce immediate returns. The moral of the story: What you put into this type of opportunity is what you will get out of it. By Giving Back you will, likewise, receive.
If immediate ROI is all you desire, I assure you that you will receive instant satisfaction from the “Thank You’s” offered by the students, faculty and peers you help support. Not to mention, you’ll find your sense of community will deepen, because you’ve taken the time to rejuvenate trusted camaraderie with some of the relationships you’ve inevitably lost-touch over the years… Life is a funny thing, my friends. You never know when you’ll need some assistance, again, yourself. My thought has always been that if you actively put in time, in the now, it might just make it easier for a fellow intern or high school peer to help you out, down the road…
If you are an alumnus of The Hill School our next event is the ”2012 Leadership & Career Summit“. (Follow the link provided to join us on the LinkedIn Sub-group)!
